Facial brushes: A poor woman's alternative to the Clarisonic

Whilst speaking to a MUA friend of mine the other day, the subject of exfoliation for clients and the Clarisonic came up. Celebrity make-up artists KJ Bennet and Jordan Liberty swear by the Clarisonic and it's abilities to make anyone's skin look pretty darn good. Even Wayne of Gossmakeupartist likes it. It seems as though the Clarisonic is definitely making it into the kits of some of the industry's best make-up artists.

Clarisonic says

"...Clarisonic is a professional-caliber brush that uses a gentle sonic micro-massage action to cleanse deeply. Clarisonic gently clears pores without harsh abrasion or chemicals, cleansing so effectively that all of your other skincare products absorb better.

Clinical results include 6x more makeup removed than with manual cleansing, reduced appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles, and improved skin tone."

Sounds great huh? Well if you'd like this handy device it is currently available in the UK from Space NK for a smooth £150. Yeah you read right. £150. I would love to pick one up but at this present moment I don't have 150 individual pounds to spend on an electric facial brush. You need to see my make-up wish list to understand why it's not at the top! Instead the cheapo inside of me did a bit of research to see what alternatives were available to the regular woman out there who wants a good exfoliating experience without the hefty price tag. Check out these facial brushes that are purse friendly but can give a pretty good result. Work it!

Facial Brush - Natural Bristle

They say,

"Made from Hemu Wood and Natural Bristle, this handy little brush is superb for exfoliation and face polishing. Use gently with your favourite facial wash."

Google is a great thing I tell you! I found this brush for a mere 82p (it could be too good to be true but for the price I'm willing to try it!)

Facial Brush with a lid

Body shop says,

"A small nylon brush for the face suitable for use with cleansers, facial washes or exfoliators from The Body Shop®. The ergonomically improved shape allows for maximum control. Supplied with a flush-fitting lid, which allows excess water to be drawn away from the bristles after use for increased hygiene and protection."

Rhamnousia did a post recently on her Body shop facial brush. I was intrigued and picked the new Body shop version that looks like the one above for an recession busting £3.00. I have to say that so far I have already noticed a visible difference in my skin. I had a mini break out but I kinda expected that. Even David says that I look like I'm glowing. Extra points!! The brush is a lot smaller than you think but for the purpose it serves, it works really well. All you need to do is put your regular facial cleanser on the brush and massage away the dead skin and gunk. For £3.00 I am very happy with the result.

Dermalogica Exfoliating Face Brush

What Dermalogica say,

"The Face Brush by Dermalogica will supercharge your cleanser with its ultra-soft bristles. Perfect to compliment a mans skin care regimen to prevent ingrown facial hairs and gently exfoliate dead skin cells. Durable, hygienic, and quick-drying nylon bristles gently loosen dead skin cells and debris for excellent results. The Face Brush by Dermalogica is packaged in a convenient travel case. This brush can help you get the most out of your Dermalogica skin care regimen including our anti-aging and sensitive skin care products."

This brush retails from about £11.50 and its the first facial brush that included male users in its description. To be honest it probably doesn't really matter who uses it but gentlemen you aren't forgotten. If you're interested in this brush, shop around. It seems to come in a variety of prices.

Eco Friendly Facial Brush

This brush is looks as thought it could be another good find. Especially for you eco-friendly ladies out there, this facial brush is right up your alley. It retails for £7.50, is hand made from sustainable resources, is fair trade and gentle on your skin! Wonderful all rounder! Check it out.

They say,

"Made from sustainable beech wood this face brush is used to gently exfoliate your skin. The bristles (made from natural fibres) get rid of any dead skin cells, revealing new and younger looking skin within weeks. A superior quality face brush that looks great and last a long time."

I hope that gives you a few options when it comes to facial brushes. You might not have thought to get one but seeing as they are affordable why not try one and see if it makes a difference for you. If you do, let me know. I love to hear back from you guys. And if you are already using another one or find a different one, tell me. I'm curious to know just how many options we have out there in the world of facial brushes.

It's friday! Have a blessed weekend!

Review of Nicole's (Nicole Farhi) Restaurant

Nicole’s in London is situated on New Bond St, in the basement of Nicole Farhi’s store (opposite Louis Vuitton’s New Store). It’s well decorated and neutral, the staff were friendly and pretty attentive. When we show up its about half one on a Tuesday and recession or not the venue is packed full of diners. In fact they’ve already sold out of a handful of dishes on their carefully crafted menu.
Looking at it from an ex restaurateurs eyes- It seems to be fresh and perhaps recreated daily (although I strongly doubt that). It seemed unusual that there were lots of heavy dishes on the menu such as Rack of Lamb and Moroccan Chicken with Cous Cous- no lunch time nibbles on this menu ladies (made us glad we forgot to eat breakfast in the morning rush). One of the really odd things about Nicole’s menu is that it lacked any vegetarian main dishes- although it was abundant with glorious fish dishes (which most of the party had).
Our table went for the Salmon served with Asparagus and a White Wine Sauce, Sea Bass served with Potato Chips and a Large Portion of the Pumpkin and Wild Mushroom Salad (intended to be a starter).
We didn’t wait long for our food, Portions were perfectly sized, Flavours fresh and considerate to all ingredients involved and the settings were very pleasant.
Would we recommend ? Definitely for an early dinner and drinks- this venue isn’t catered to those of us more partial to a light lunch.
Price Points: Very Fair considering the location, quality of food and service combined

Sandra Bullocks Baby adoption hints in Oscar Speech

We’ve all known girls who have been through hell in relationships and have indulged in a little pick me up. The girlfriend viciously dumped (or perhaps unhappy in a relationship) who buys a kitten, or a rabbit or a puppy. The office colleague who had to move back in with their parents for a bit of emotional support. Many of us are guilty for having a post break up one night stand. But Sandra Bullock has gone one further and stepped out of her media silence accompanied by her new son Louis Bardo Bullock
an adopted toddler from New Orleans. Perhaps this is the perfect way for the beautiful star to move on from her last three months of hell (since finally winning an Oscar a string of her tattooed biker husband Jesse’s affairs have fallen quite grotesquely at of the closet). Already dubbed “an amazing stepmother” to Jesse’s daughter and renowned for being “great with kids” we’ll sure she’ll do a great job.
Rumour has it that her Oscar acceptance speech was riddled with clues that she was planning to adopt.
See the video here. This news comes just as Bullock admits she will be filing for divorce against Jesse James but will not seek custody.

It's been a bad week for: J Lo

It’s been an interesting week for J-Lo. After hot footing it to London to promote her first film in FOUR YEARS- J-Lo had a bit of a bad night. Barely written up in the press, her new film “The Back Up Plan” is pretty much expected to be another “now you see it, now you don’t” flop. If that wasn’t bad enough the PR seemed to have one or two issues booking celebs to go. The guest list reads as a who’s who of being famous for being on reality TV. Don’t expect any high punchers off the C List- possibly the most recognisable faces were that of X Factor winner Alexandra Burke and Kerry Katona. I guess the only plus side of the red carpet event is that Jennifer (now mother of twins) didn’t have to work very hard to land on the best dressed list of the night. However in our opinion S-Amanda (of big brother twin fame) were the best dressed ladies at the event. Phew that’s a sentence we’d never thought we’d say.

Meeting Betsie Dsane at Beauty with a Purpose

Misticon attended a very special charity fundraiser this weekend at Molton House. Beauty with a purpose was hosted by the lovely Bestie Dsane. The event was centric around nail artist Myrdith Leon Mccormack who looks after the stars like Kim Kardashian in NYC but is originally from Haiti. To raise money for this great cause she threw a drinks and nails party with all moneys raised being split between the key charities doing great work in Haiti.
We caught up with Betsie Dsane in the bar at Molton House and our lovely photographer George Althaus was on hand to grab some pics.
Misticon Man Ben (find him on twitter ) got so carried away with the fun and charity fell of the night that he even got his nails done!

Volcanic Ash Clouds threatens second swoop

That Volcanic ash cloud we told you about last week is getting worse. Today Scottish airports were opened only for it be announced it would again be a no fly zone from midday. This has been cause by the Volcano in Iceland continuing to spew ash into the atmosphere. This undoubtedly will push back many peoples travel plans- the best advice to those in limbo keep in daily contact with your travel company. It is highly unlikely that anyone who was scheduled to fly over that next two weeks will do so on their original time frame as priority for seats on flights are being allocated to those away from home.

How the Outnet Failed

It seemed like the perfect idea (hell we blogged about it) but in practice the Outnet £1 Birthday Sale sucked. All over twitter there are disgruntled fashionistas lamenting the hours they spent refreshing pages only to be kicked in the teeth by error messages.
It is rumoured that the outnet only has hosting capacity for 10k of visitors an hour and it got 1.5 million hits this morning.
We didn't get our hands on anything I'm afraid to report.
But we thought we wouldn't get in the way of our customers getting a bargain for TODAY ONLY.

Cemetry Junction Film Review

Ricky Gervais films can be a bit of a hit or miss gamble- Ghost Town and the Invention of Lying are two that pop to mind for being particularly irritating.
So when I heard that him and Stephen Merchant had co written and produced a new film it wasn't first on my "To See" list. I went to the Cinema last night with the full intention of seeing new Drew Barrymore project "Whip it"- fate was against it as the 6.15 showing had sold out. Pulling at straws me and my best friend Ellie decided to gamble on Cemetry Junction.

We were plesantly suprised whilst the film didn't ever punch in as many jokes as you would expect from a Merchatn/ Gervais project - it was overal pleasant and enjoyable.
This social comedy tells the story of three young men from a working class town called Cemetry Junction i nthe 70's. Faced with low expectations from their families and neighbours alike it follows them as they explore issues with their home lifes, work and of course ladies.
Particularly noteable was the performance of Tom Hughes and Felicity Jones who both shine in this film.
Well worth a mid week watch.

Jude Law gets a make over

Strolling through my local cinema last night I had to do a double take at the movie posters in the foyer. It seems that Jude Law has been given a bit of an unusual makeover for the launch of his new film Repo Men.
These two posters were side to side at my local Odeon and I had to do a double take as I was convinced Jude Law was in fact the Rock (aka Dwayne Johnson).
They look like brothers- down to the facial expression.
It's interesting because Jude Laws new film see's him step into an action role from his more common role as a Romcom soft actor. We're not convinced he will make the transition

Ridiculous news story of the day!

Sainsbury's have banned their butchers from using knives in the interest of health and safety. Uhm okay !
A customer asked the butcher at his local Sainsbury's to remove the bone from a lamb joint- the butcher replied "My bosses won't let me." Another lovely health and safety issue
Customer John Wilkinso said "I couldn't believe my ears. He said he couldn't do it in case he cut himself and he wouldn't be insured."
The official quote from Sainsbury's is "Our colleagues who work on the meat counters are all trained to use knives, but some have not received all of the training to safely debone a lamb joint."
That would be another reason to be visiting your local butcher over the supermarket then.

What Up Knitta! Graffiti you can cuddle.

Know this is my kind of Graffiti- My Mum taught me how to finger knit at three and ever since I've been hooked. Fortunately for me it's got a lot more fashionable in the last few years with the arrival of very trendy knitting groups like Stitch N Bitch.
However this little street team of knitters have not been on my radar untill today. Knitta is a great street art group founded by Magda Sayeg.
Magda Sayeg, founder of Knitta Please, began by taking knitting out of the home and into the streets. The simple juxtaposition of this woven material placed within an urban environment has inspired a new generation of knitters who no longer view function as the sole purpose for knitting. This new approach to knitting questions the assumptions of a traditional craft while adding a previously unused material to the world of street art.
Take a look at some of this lovely graffiti you can cuddle.

When Magda Sayeg began Knittaplease in 2005, it was her response to the dehumanizing qualities of an urban environment. By inserting handmade art in a landscape of concrete and steel, she adds a human quality that otherwise rarely exists. Knittaplease represents the present energy coming from knitting and more extensively weaving, while giving a nod to its powerful history. Her work has been recognized for its influence in street art as well as the craft of knitting. Magda Sayeg is based in Austin, Texas

Fuerteventura means Very Windy in Spanish - Vicki's surf trip

I'd almost forgotten what it feels like to surf in warm water with the warm sun on your face...mmmm it's good.

When we arrived at Fuerteventura's brand new swanky airport, we discovered that our hire car had been cancelled, not a great start to the holiday. (Oh that and also someone else had gone off with my bag and left theirs so we had to frantically check everyones bags outside, luckily we caught the coach it was on just before they drove off...phew!) It meant we couldn't trail around looking for the best waves but fortunately we were staying in Cotillo which has it's own pretty good beach break with which we became quite well acquainted.

Cotillo beach

Once I overcame the initial shock of the bleak, barren, volcanic landscape, I came to appreciate Fuerteventura in all it's unique beauty. The small, fishing village of Cotillo is very tranquil (when the wind isn't howling), set in between a beautiful, windswept beach to the south and lagoons to the north. We stayed right by the lagoons so we had short walk to the other side of the village to the beach everyday, sometimes twice a day, but it's all good for the fitness levels!

Cotillo beach

The first couple of days was nice and relaxed 2-3ft surf, not too busy, locals seemed pretty friendly. All good apart I got a little bit caught out at high tide, in a rip that came out of nowhere, only to be washed helplessly over rocks back to shore. The next couple of the days the wind picked up from a bearable breeze to a mighty force to be reckoned with. That and the 3 metre swell made surfing a bit of a challenge which me and my surf mate Kate weren't up for. Reading and sunbathing on a sheltered terrace was a much more appealing option.

The wind finally dropped and conditions calmed down to a much more amiable 3ft although the wind was still messing up the waves a little. Neither Kate or I have been surfing much lately so we spent a good part of the beginning of the week feeling totally un-surf-fit and generally exhausted. By the end of the week, we were indestructible surf machines, well not quite but we certainly felt a lot more comfortable out there and the last couple of days was super fun, non-stop surf.

Kate and weird looking cat

Definitely a unique place (apparently Fuerteventura is the oldest, largest and most undeveloped of the Canary Islands), it was well worth seeing, perfect way to and blow away the winter cobwebs, literally. I would go back but in October when the wind drops, so we hear, oh and I'd make sure we had a car just in case for those bone-rattlingly windy days.

To have a look at my photography from Fuerteventura click here

Hope you're all enjoying the sunshine!

Snoop Dogg Duets with Subo?

Uhh nah, we don't think so. Our favourite pot fuelled father/rapper/reality TV star has announced that he would be interested in dueting with SuBo (aka Britain's got Talent Susan Boyle)"We're going to get our minds together and figure out what we're going to sing about. I'm down with that. There isn't much I can't do."

The Army discriminates against single mother Soldier

Well this is an interesting news story for the Misticon Ladies, single Mother Soldier Tilern DeBique is set to win damages of in access of £100'000. The signals technician based in Chelsea was formally disciplined when she failed to turn appear on parade when her daughter was ill and she was unable to arrange alternative child care. Ex-corporal Tilern was recruited on a drive in her village in the Carribean in 2001- she gave birth to her daughter in 2005- and had tried to get her sister to immigrate over to help raise her daughter but was told that the army couldn't support the immigration. Her commanding officer in the 10th Signal Regiment told her the Army was ‘unsuitable for a single mother who couldn’t sort out her childcare’, Central London Employment Tribunal heard.
The 28-year-old, from St Vincent and the Grenadines, won her sex and race discrimination case and will begin discussions with MoD lawyers about a compensation payout for loss of earnings and injury to feelings.
Unbelievably the representative from the MOD said they would fight the compensations of earnings on the sex descrimination compensation "because only six per cent of female soldiers serve their full 22 years."
Maybe theres a reason or two behind that hey?

Back from Barca!

Great weather, great hotel (with a massive shower room!), great tapas and great sites. Barcelona has some lovely architecture and sites! Mine and Mr One Piece's faves included Gaudi designed stuff (Unfinished Cathedral/ Park Guell etc), the aquarium and port, the Olympic Stadium and La Ramblas which we checked out on the tourist bus! While Mr One Piece loved the Maritime Museum because he is a bit of a geek who loves Hornblower.

We weren't too crazy about the Picasso museum though! We don't really get art and kept sniggering at things. Ah well!

We dined in Hard Rock one night and saw some cool Kiss, Van Halen, Madonna, Alice Cooper, Morrissey and Foo Fighters memorabilia! The saxaphone chandelier was pretty rad too!

I would definitely recommend checking it out if you love art as there's load of galleries, exhibitions and museums. The Modernista architecture is great too. If you're a foodie too, there are tasty places to dine everywhere you look and bars to match too! All in all it's a lovely city with lots to see and wonderful atmosphere.

Hope you enjoyed your bank holiday weekend whatever you got up to! Just purchased my Aerosmith tickets. Over a hundred quid - ouch! But going to be worth it! Dropkick Murphys and Face to Face gig next sunday! Yes!

Also worth an honourable mention is the Airbourne gig we went to the night before Barca! With 24 amps on the stage, those boys really rocked out bogan style! If you haven't heard of Airbourne before and like AC / DC, then they are worth having a listen to. The band live and breath rock and roll. They reminded me a little of Spinal Tap though! :)
The crazy lead singer also rocked out across the entire venue which was very nice for us in the balcony! He ran past our buddy Courtney at one point which was very very cool too! Check them out at www.airbournerock.com

Much love,

Jessica Simpson, Make-up Free. Whatchu Think?!

Usually I'm not one for celebrity shenanigans but this magazine cover had me intrigued. Jessica Simpson posed for Marie Claire completely make-up free. No retouching. Nada. Just Jessica.

I ain't one to call anyone a liar but I'm really not sure about this picture. It might be my tired eyes, but doesn't she look like she definitely has got a bit of eyeliner going on? Or at least some mascara? Come on ladies help me out. Especially you pro's out there. Tell me if I'm hating on a sister. I see filled in eyebrows and some face powder. Oh and a touch of blush and matte lipstick! This could be the best natural make-up there ever was!

This picture below looks "natural"

Then again it could all be my eyes. Let me know!

Funky Sister Deborah

*note* These pictures do no belong to me. I merely borrowed them from Google :)

Alright Cheryl we get it your single and your doing amazing

Last week we believer her twitter report that the image above was just Cheryl touching her hair and that she definately wasn't flaunting her new single status. The X Factor Judge said via Twitter : "I find it crazy that people would think I use this as some sort of msg. Believe it or not Ashley is fully aware of any situation going on in our personal lives."He does not need to see a picture of me moving the hair out of my face to explain anything. Please drop it."
However then we saw this papped pic from Paris where the former Girls Aloud singer is currently performing and we have to be honest here- why wear an Alexander McQueen Skull ring on your wedding ring finger so shortly after having a rant on twitter about how your not flaunting it to Ashley Cole?
Fairs fair theres freedom of choice and then theres doing things that you know will give you publicity.
Not that she needs it at the moment she's been voted "No1 Most stylish woman" in Glamour's latest issued with Rihanna coming second and Co Judge Danni Minogue in 6th place.

We love Rihanna but don't tell her a secret!

Rihanna let slip about gal pal Katy Perry's plans to marry in India this year whilst doing a radio interview "She put that on me last week,' she told US radio DJ Ryan Seacrest during an interview on his Kiis FM show.

'I have to come up with something cool because she's getting married in India so I'm like "Okay, now what do I do to match that?"'

We're not suprised though after all of the pics that came back from thew couples last visit to india where Russel Brand proposed and they get their relationship blessed by a love guru.
We are still out on our verdict on Russel and whether he'll stay true though- what do you think?

Misticon in South Africa

Misticon just went international! Our lovely photographer George is in South Africa at the moment on plenty of shoots. He took some Misticon Clothing with him and look what happened.

Dawn French and Lenny Henry Split After 25 years

Aww it's said but true Britains funniest couple are on the rocks In a very recent statement the couples PR has announced that "The separation is entirely amicable and they fully intend to maintain their close friendship. Their priority is to commit to the future joint parenting of their daughter."
Aparently the decision to split was made in October with the couple "living in honesty" (no we cant translate that pr to english either) since then.
The couple have been through alot over the years including an affair Lenny was caught having in 1999 with a "typical dumb blonde".

Heidi Montag to Costar Kristin- Dont Call Me

Well is there anyone Heidi Montag doesn't want to piss of these days? Appparantly not as the 23yo "star" of dreality show The Hills has apparantly deliberately changed her number so costars can't get hold of her.
Uhmm okay just who do you think you are Montag?
Perhaps comments made by a casting director last week went to her head :
"Lindsay (LOHAN) hasn't worked for a long time, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. It's very hard to get her insurance and no studio or director is going to hire her without it. At this point, Heidi Montag is likely to make more movies than Lindsay Lohan."

Charlotte Church's top Diet Tip?

She may have cut out a few naughty treats in order to tone down to her new more slender figure but that doesnt mean that Charlotte doesnt neglect herself enough to deprive her of some much needed R&R.
The Welsh singer was spotted leaving the Andrew Lloyd Webber "Over the Rainbow" Talent show this weekend with a glass of white wine in her hand. Charlotte went strait to meet BF Gavin Henson at a London Hotel.
After the Scandal she caused last week for taking up smoking again (she quit in 2006) we're worried she might get mobbed by the press again for living a hectic lifestyle.
